Originally called “Ad Monilia”in the IV century road map “Tabula Puntigeriana”, the town probably owes its name to the brightness of the sea of this little gulf.Moneglia is a typical seaside town with its narrow streets, slate roofs, fishing boats and olive groves (the oil is famous for its quality) but the town’s great loyalty to the Republic of Genoa has left his mark. At the highest point of the village there are two fortresses to control the entrances to the town from the land. One of them is the XII century Castle of Villafranca that has been restored and is today open to visitors. The town’s medieval church of San Giorgio (adjoining the Franciscan cloister) contains a Rubens.Its Oratorio dei Disciplinati, built a thousand years ago, still preserves frescoes on its interior walls. Three significant artists were born here: painter Luca Cambiaso, printer and papermakers Burgo and the classic romaticist Liala.
